Oil safe disposal

Used oil constitutes a form of hazardous waste due to its potential impacts if incorrectly disposed of.

Examples include old engine oil, used cooking oil, and animal fats.

Oil waste is generated by electrical, engineering and vehicle maintenance facilities, and in kitchens.

Rhodes University Procedures

Rhodes University requires all staff and students to adhere to its socially and environmentally responsible hazardous waste disposal practices, in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Each facility should manage its oil waste in its area of responsibility.

Engine oil:

  • Collect used engine oil in a leakproof drum with a secure lid.
  • Store in a secure, dry place until sufficiently full for disposal.
  • Only approved oil waste collection services should be used - Oilcol collects from RU Mechanical Engineering Workshop once a year.

Cooking oil:

  • Collect used cooking oil in 20 litre cooking oil drum with snap-on lid (Food Services).
  • Only approved oil waste collection services should be used - such as Scope Oils (PE) or Biofusion (EL).
  • The used oil is converted into biodiesel.
