Robert Edwards was born in KZN and grew up on a sugar farm on the outskirts of Durban. From a young age he became passionate about nature though finance is his career calling. Growing up on a farm allowed him to connect with the staff and learn their life stories and struggles. Robert has a passion for financial literacy and together with a Rhodes Alumni, Onke Luzipho in 2020, they created Inyathi Imali, a 3-part basic financial literacy podcast series in Xhosa which can be found on YouTube.
After leaving Hilton College in 2007 (having focused mostly on playing multiple sports) Robert attended Concord University in the USA on a golf scholarship. He graduated Magna-Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in finance and returned to South Africa. At this point, Robert was unsure what to do next and started his SAICA articles at a firm in Pietermaritzburg, he also started studying for an accounting degree through UNISA. After completing both his accounting degree and articles, Robert decided to do his PGD in Accounting at Rhodes University in 2016. He had visited Rhodes in the past as both his sisters and cousin had attended Rhodes and felt it was a wonderful place to study and enjoy all that the local Eastern Cape region offered. Robert enjoyed the year thoroughly, made great friends and passed his PGDA finishing near the top of his class.
In 2017 Robert started working in the Forensic division at EY in Durban, during this year he also wrote his CA Board one exam – placing 4th in South Africa and wrote Board two – finishing on the Honors Roll.
During 2018 Robert moved to London to pursue a career in Investment Banking, he joined Aalto Capital and has progressed to being a Director of the London office. While in London Robert has been actively involved in SAICA events and is a Youth Committee Member of the South African Chamber of Commerce which helps drive business between the UK and South Africa. Robert loves South Africa and works from home here every Dec, Jan and Feb. He connects with family, friends and South African businesses looking to expand locally and internationally. Robert has a passion for education and the development of South Africa which is why he has joined the Rhodes UK trust.
