Over the course of my academic career, I have balanced research in synthetic chemistry and into tertiary science education. I have also taught chemistry across all undergrad levels and honours, and I have taught theology at a Masters's level. I hold a PhD in medicinal chemistry from UCT where I graduated in 2002. Over the last four or five years, the balance of my research has tipped towards education. I have just completed a PhD in education from Stellenbosch University entitled ‘Towards knower awareness in chemistry and chemistry education. My deep passion is to facilitate holistic education in the context of tertiary science degrees. To this end, I think we need to pay attention to the person of the student and be clear about knowledge building.
