The Northern Cape Teacher Development project was conceptualised by a consortium of three teacher education centres based at the University. The three centres, Institute for the Study of English in Africa (ISEA), Rhodes University Mathematics Education Project (RUMEP) and Centre for Social Development (CSD) underpin teacher professional development through University-based teaching sessions and district level workshops.
The programme consists of a B.Ed (In-service) specialising in Foundation Phase, English Language Teaching (FET) and Mathematics Education (SP/FET).
The SIOC-cdt has undertaken to allocate funding to the Project, which will support the professional development of teachers from the John Taolo Gaetsewe, Frances Baart and Siyanda districts in the Northern Cape Province, over a four year cycle. A total of 36 teachers from the three districts will be enrolled on each of the three BEd streams. This brings the total number of teachers receiving their degrees to 108 (Launch booklet, 2011).
