Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees
Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMDs) award full-degree EU-funded scholarships to Master students from around the world covering tuition, travel, and a living allowance. The programmes last from one to two years during which students study in at least two different European countries. Upon graduation, they are awarded a joint or double degree, or multiple degrees.
Students can apply to these programmes even if the university where they studied is not involved in any of them. They can see the available programmes in the EMJMD Catalogue and apply directly to the programme coordinator: https://eacea.ec.europa.eu/erasmus-plus/library/emjmd-catalogue_en
Each programme offers some 15-20 scholarships per year, plus a number of additional scholarships for students from ACP countries.
Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMDs) award full-degree EU-funded scholarships to Master students from around the world covering tuition, travel and living costs. So far, 900 students from ACP countries have been awarded Erasmus Mundus scholarships.
Institutions from ACP countries can also be part of the consortia that deliver these programmes, as Full Partners, which means they officially award degrees, or as Associated Partners, where they participate in the programme in some kind of capacity, but do not award the actual joint degree.
ACP partners
From 2014 to 2019, there were 100 instances of participation by institutions from the ACP region (96 from Africa and 4 from the Caribbean) were involved in 37 of the 204 selected EMJMDs.
Of these, 91 were acting as associated partners in 35 of the EMJMDs. Eight ACP universities – from Uganda (2), Burkina Fso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Sudan and Senegal take part as as full partners in six of the projects.

Background:
Project: Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems (GDEs) and Biodiversity in the Khakea/Bray Transboundary Aquifer Project
Post graduate opportunity in Biodiversity and Geohydrology - 2021 to 2023
SADC-GMI is a Centre of Excellence subsidiary of the SADC Secretariat with the mandate to promote the sustainable conjunctive surface and groundwater management and provide solutions to groundwater challenges in the SADC region. The SADC-GMI secured funding from the JRS Biodiversity Foundation to implement the Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems (GDEs) and Biodiversity in the Khakhea/ Bray Dolomite Transboundary Aquifer (TBA) research project. The Khakea/Bray TBA is shared between Botswana and South Africa. The project is envisaged to run over three years from August 2020 until July 2023.
The proposed project therefore seeks to:
- Perform a desktop delineation of the Khakea/Bray Transboundary Aquifer, Delineate GDEs in the Khakea/ Bray TBA by means of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems,
- Perform hydrogeological/geohydrological investigations around the identified GDEs,
- Collect ground and surface water biodiversity data at the identified GDEs and assess the ecological conditions at the GDEs,
- Identify and explain the linkages between groundwater and surface water ecosystems i.e. wetlands and rivers,
- Identify hotspots where management interventions should be focused, and
- Develop a Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems Atlas which is, linked to a biodiversity database.
The results from this study which is in line with SADC-GMI's mandate will feed into a Decision Support System being developed for the TBA to assist both Botswana and South Africa's needs.
Leadership of this project is through Eng. James Sauramba as Project Director, supported by three key technical experts in Biodiversity; Geohydrology; and GIS/Remote Sensing respectively. Mainstreaming of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) is assured through a dedicated GESI Expert.
Post Graduate Research bursaries
The SADC-GMI through this JRS Biodiversity Foundation funded project is offering bursaries for the following;

- PhD in Geohydrology - 1 Position at Institute for Groundwater Studies, University of the Free State.
- PhD in Aquatic Ecology/Biodiversity - 1 Position at Rhodes University.
- PhD in GIS/Remote Sensing - 1 Position at University of Western Cape.
Successful applicants will acquire skills in an exciting and widely applicable interdisciplinary fields involving biodiversity assessments, trophic marker analysis (i.e. stable isotope signatures) to study energy transfer between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and the application of hydrogeology/geohydrology tools to characterise aquifers. Research projects will be tailored to individual research interests mostly focusing on GDEs biodiversity assessments and geohydrology.

DAAD In-Region PhD Scholarship Programme at AIMS South Africa
DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), as a publicly funded, self governing organisation of the institutions of higher education in Germany, promotes international academic exchange as well as educational co-operation with developing countries through a variety of funding and scholarship programmes.
As part of the “In-Region Scholarship Progamme” DAAD offers scholarships for PhD studies. The programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is aimed at university staff in the first line, without neglecting the public sector demand of academically trained personnel.
The target group for scholarships are postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) with a Master’s degree who want to pursue PhD courses in South Africa (In-Region scholarships). It has been agreed upon that DAAD cooperates with AIMS by offering up to six In-Region Scholarships for PhD studies in the field of Mathematical Sciences. Students although registered at UWC, UCT or Stellenbosch University will need to be affiliated to AIMS South Africa either through co-supervision or research collaboration. Students will be required to spend some time at AIMS South Africa throughout their studies.
