Rhodes University has secured another prestigious National Research Foundation (NRF) chair position.
Psychology professor Catriona MacLeod has been appointed as head of the South African Research Chair Institute (SARChI) The research field to be explored is Critical Studies in Sexualities and Reproduction: Human and Social Dynamics Rhodes spokesman Zamuxolo Matiwana said South Africa faced significant challenges around sexuality and reproduction which the research would address.
These included high levels of forced sexual debut, sexual coercion and violence, transactional sex, HIV infection, rape, hate crimes against lesbians and gays and unwanted pregnancies. "The overarching goal of the research chair is to conduct research that addresses the social and human dynamics underpinning our slow progress towards full and just sexual and reproductive citizenship for all," Matiwana said.
Deputy vice-chancellor of research and development Dr Peter Clayton said MacLeod was a highly regarded researcher and the ideal candidate for the position. "The research will highlight new ways of conceptualising key issues, lead rigorous research that addresses social issues underpinning health inequities and promote an intellectual activism that engages in social and health realities," Clayton said.
