On Wednesday evening, Gary Steele hosted the first sports psychology lecture evening on behalf of the Psychology Department. Two psychology honours students, Tendai Gumbie and Mike McInerney, presented talks in the Eden Grove Blue lecture venue on Sports Psychology. More specifically, the title of Tendai’s talk was “Athletic injuries and Psychology”, and was based on research he conducted as part of the sports psychology practical he completed in the Psychology honours course, it also drew on his own experiences as a rugby player who suffered a major injury. The title of Mike’s talk was “Mental toughness” and was based on the research he conducted for his Psychology honours project. These talks were very well received and the cosy group of people who attended the talks showed a great deal of interest and asked numerous questions. There were even requests for members of the Psychology Department to present talks on sports psychology topics to other groups of athletes at Rhodes. More of these lecture series evenings will be held in 2011.
