The Psychology Department hosted a public lecture by Professor Roger Brooke a Professor of Psychology at the Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, USA on 27 March 2009.
Title of public lecture: "Ubuntu and the individuation process"
This paper is a post-Colonial discussion of Jung's travels in Africa and an analysis of his dreams. It is argued that Jung's colonialism was a cultural transference fantasy through which he came to Africa, and that it reinforced his colonial model of mind and the human development he called individuation. Senghor's term negritude and the term Ubuntu are used to reinterpret individuation in a way that is closer to our experience of being persons who become persons by being held within a community of persons.
