Biography

Dr Mandisi Majavu       

     

Prof Mandisi Majavu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political and International Studies at Rhodes University and a Fellow of the Future Professors Programme for 2025/26. He serves on the editorial board of Ethnic and Racial Studies. Prof. Majavu’s research delves into the political history and dynamics of racial formation across space and time, with a particular focus on South Africa. His work examines diverse themes, including white racism, anti-Black racism in Australia and New Zealand, the role of white missionaries and Christianity in 19th-century South Africa, and the intersections of race, liberalism, gender, and sports. A central aspect of his scholarship is exploring how these narratives intersect and inform one another. He has an extensive publication record in esteemed international journals such as Sociology Compass and African and Black Diaspora: An International Journal, as well as leading South African journals like THEORIA and POLITIKON. Prof. Majavu’s forthcoming book, Colonial Pogroms, builds on his established scholarship. His first monograph, Uncommodified Blackness, was published in 2017.
