Research

The focus of our Medicinal Chemistry Research Group at Rhodes University is in the design and of new (chemical) bioactive compounds. The research group is situated in the Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, and it is part of Rhodes University Centre for Chemico- and Biomedicinal Research. Our early drug discovery endeavours involved malaria (Prof Heinrich Hoppe – RU & Dr Dale Taylor – UCT), trypanosomes (Prof Heinrich Hoppe – RU), breast cancer (Prof Adrienne Edkins & Dr Jo-Anne de la Mare - RU), trichonomiasis (Prof Kirkwood Land – UP, USA), schistosomiasis (Prof Cornor Caffrey – UCSA, USA) and tuberculosis (TB – Prof Digby Warner – UCT).
