This course is intended to enhance the spoken, written and visual communicative competencies of Commerce students usually in their second academic year at Rhodes University. Professional Communication is designed, managed and taught mainly by the Department of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies in collaboration with other departments in the Faculty of Commerce. The course was initiated by the Commerce faculty in response to complaints from the business sector that their newly employed graduates lacked adequate language and communicative competencies. Thus this course, whilst exposing students to some linguistic theory, is essentially experiential and practical. Its aim is to develop the communicative competence of graduates for work in business.
Professional Communication is a one-semester course, offered in Semester 1.
