The combination of Corpus Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis is a relatively new, and very exciting, development in linguistics. Rhodes Linguistics lecturer Sally Hunt went to the University of the Western Cape during the September vac to give a workshop to their post graduate students and staff on using corpora in ideological analysis. While she was there she also presented a seminar entitled "Blood, Sweat and Tears", based on her PhD research on gender and physical identity in children's literature. "It was a very productive visit," says Sally, "and certainly paved the way for future collaboration in research areas that we have in common, mainly to do with identity".
