A group of Rhodes Linguistics staff and postgraduate students took part in the Rhodes University Health Suite's annual charity Cyclathon on Friday 22 August. They hopped on indoor bikes for a 40-minute slot themed "Tight and Lumo", and dressed the part in some rather loud outfits!
The cyclathon was held to raise funds for the We MiND Foundation, a local charity that creates awareness and raises funds for people suffering from Motor Neurone Disease and other muscular diseases. Participants supported the Foundation by paying for slots in the 12-hour event. The Linguistics team had great fun and worked up a sweat for this good cause. Will Bennett, resplendent in luminous yellow in the photo, won the prize as the best-dressed person in our slot, while Mark de Vos won a prize for correctly identifying the most TV series and movies that featured songs played during the session. This is yet more proof that linguists are not only brilliant, but know how to have fun as well!
