Ruth First House Awards
At our Annual Residence Awards Evening in the forth term we award four trophies, recognising achievements in academics, sport and all-round participation.
Below are the awards and those recognised for them.
Nelson Mandela Award - Outstanding Achievement in Sport:
(2006) Micheen Thornycroft for her ongoing participation in the Rhodes 1st Rowing Team.
(2007) Barbel Wienecke for her consistent participation in inter-res sport.
(2008) Cari-Lee Haakonsen for her consistent participation in inter-res sport.
(2009) Natalie Ross for her consistent participation in inter-res sport and her excellent RU athletics results.
(2010) Charlene Donald for her consistent participation in inter-res sport. She will be the Sports rep for 2011.
(2011) Charlene Donald for her consistent participation in inter-res sport.
Sarah Baartman Award - Outstanding All-Round Achievement:
(2006) Jaqualine Spellas for her invaluable contribution to the residence over the course of her time in Ruth First. Jacqui participated in virtually every residence event for three years, always enthusiastic and always willing to lend a hand.
(2007) Juliana Jangara & Charmaine Chitiyo for their involvement in the Ruth First Commemorations.
(2008) Franchesca Beru
(2009) Kiarin Gillies
(2010) Aluzuko Noqayi for her contribution to the House Comm. as Secretary/Food Rep, her participation in inter-res sport and her creative contribution to the Ruth First memorial lecture.
(2011) Fiona Christensen.
Albertina Sisulu Award - Outstanding Academic Achievement by a 1st Year:
(2006) Kim Looring van Beeck for achieving three firsts and two upper seconds in her first University exams.
(2007) Sekai Tombe for achieving a 78% in her first University exam.
(2008) Megan Grundling for achieving an 80% average (with 6 subjects) in her first University exams.
(2009) Caroline Ross for achieving an 89% average in her first University exams.
(2010) Naledi Dichabe for achieving an 80% average in her first University exams.
(2011) Juliette Lagesse & Georgina Niven
Tebello Nyokong Award - Outstanding Academic Achievement by a Returning Student:
(2006) Angy Youssef for maintaining a 75+% academic average for the past three years. Angy is currently the top Humanities student and was featured by the SABC as one of the top 10 students in South Africa.
(2007) Kylie van Zyl for maintaining a 75+% academic average for the past two years. Kylie has just completed History Honours with distinction.
(2008) Sekai Tombe for maintaining a 75+% academic average for the past two years.
(2009) Sekai Tombe for maintaining a 75+% academic average for the past three years.
(2010) Megan Grundling for maintaining a 75+% academic average for the past three years.
