We are thrilled to announce the upcoming PASMAE (Pan-African Society for Musical Arts Education) Music Conference scheduled from the 25th to the 27th of March in the Beethoven Room, Department of Music and Musicology. This event promises to be a melting pot of musical artistry, educational innovation, and cultural exchange, bringing together some of the most talented musicians, educators, and scholars from across the African continent and beyond.

Special Events Highlight

Welcome Cocktail & Opening Concert: Day 1 of the conference ends with a welcome cocktail event, followed by a captivating short concert, starting at 17:00 at Rhodes Theatre. This opening celebration promises to be a memorable introduction to the conference's spirited agenda. It includes the Rhodes University Chamber Choir and the Rhodes University African Chorus presenting their first concert of the year, celebrating music education.

Tribute to South African Composers: In conjunction with the RU120 celebrations, the Department of Music and Musicology is honoured to pay homage to prominent, award-winning South African composers, all alumni of Rhodes University, known for their unique blend of Western Art techniques with traditional African musical styles. The conference will feature three performances by RU staff and advanced performance students, showcasing the high international standards of creative endeavour at the Music Department.

A special lunch-hour concert celebrating the genius of RU composers and performers is open to the public on Day 2. This tribute will take place on 26 March at 12:30 pm in the Beethoven Room, offering an unparalleled opportunity to experience the fusion of traditional and contemporary musical styles. Entrance is R50 per person and free for music students.
