Rhodes University will see 2250 students graduate in 2016 over six ceremonies which will take place from 31 March to 2 April. Five Honorary Doctorates will be awarded, to the following most worthy recipients: Dr Beatrice Mtetwa, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, Mr James Matthews, Ms Jeunesse Park and Professor Edward Webster.
Of the 2250 students who will receive their degrees and diplomas, 1 235 (or 55%) are undergraduate Bachelor’s degrees and 1015 (or 45%) are postgraduate degrees and diplomas. Of the 1 015 postgraduate students, 230 will be receiving their Master’s degrees.
This year 67 students will graduate with PhD degrees. The Faculty of Humanities will celebrate a new record of 19 PhD degrees on Thursday morning, 31 March, up from 17 in 2015.
Of the 2250 graduates, 58% are women; and 19% are international students.
The Faculty of Science, which is the third largest Faculty in the University, has produced 34 PhDs, more than all the other five Faculties combined.
The six University Graduation Ceremonies in March/April 2016 will take place in the main auditorium of the 1820 Settlers’ Monument.
On 31 March 2016 at 10:00, Rhodes conferred an Honorary Doctorate on internationally acclaimed South African poet and author, Mr James Matthews.
Rhodes will be conferring an Honorary Doctorate on environmental pioneer and social justice leader, Ms Jeunesse Park, at the graduation ceremony on the 31st March at 17:00.
On Friday the 1st April at 10:00, Rhodes is conferring an Honorary Doctorate on Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, founder and leader of Gift of the Givers.
In the evening of 1 April, at 18:30, Rhodes will confer an Honorary Doctorate on human rights and media freedom lawyer, Dr Beatrice Mtetwa.
On Saturday 2 April at 10:00, Rhodes will confer an Honorary Doctorate on Professor Edward Webster, an old Rhodian and Internationally recognised sociologist.
