Harriette Okal

Degree: PhD. Hydrology

Working thesis title: Integration of Satellite Data in Reducing Hydrological Modelling Uncertainty for Sustainable Water Resources Management in Sub-Saharan Africa

Supervisors: Dr. Jane Tanner & Dr. Sukhmani Mantel

Year of registration: 2021

Biography:

Harriette is a currently pursuing her PhD in Hydrology and her research focuses on evaluating the integration of satellite data in reducing hydrological modelling uncertainties using the revised PITMAN model to generate a framework for new water resource assessment approaches given the changing landscape of water resources development, for the sustainability of water resources in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study is mainly driven by data scarcity on hydro-climatic and hydro-meteorological variables as a result of declining and lack, thereof, of monitoring systems in large parts of the region. This has resulted in decisions on management, planning, and assessment of water resources being made from erroneous, insufficient and non-existent data.

She holds a Master’s Degree in Land and Water Management from the University of Embu, Kenya where her thesis centred on characterization historical droughts of the Upper Tana River, Kenya using remotely sensed data. She also has a Bachelor’s degree in Water Resources Management from the University of Nairobi, Kenya.
