BEd in English Teaching

The ISEA proudly offers a Bachelor of Education (BEd) undergraduate degree in English as a First Additional Language, designed for primary and high school teachers (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Phase) who wish to enhance their teaching skills and advance as professional educators. This three-year, part-time program provides a comprehensive foundation in teaching English, integrating both subject knowledge and teaching methodology to prepare educators for the classroom.

The programme’s curriculum spans a range of essential modules, including Education and Professional Studies, English First Additional Language (SP and FET), Teaching Tools and Technologies, and School Librarianship. These courses are designed to provide educators with both theoretical knowledge and practical strategies for effective teaching. Additionally, ISEA lecturers visit students at their schools to offer personalized support and address specific classroom challenges, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning experience.

To accommodate the schedules of full-time teachers, lectures and seminars are conveniently held during school holidays and over long weekends. This structure aligns with ISEA’s mission to support ongoing teacher development and educational excellence across South Africa.

The programme has been generously funded by the Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Basic Education (2003 - 2018), Zenex Foundation (2007 - 2012), and Sishen Iron Ore Company-Community Development Trust (SIOC-cdt) (2012 - current)

Through sustained funding, the program has empowered educators across the region to strengthen their expertise in English language teaching, directly enhancing educational standards in schools throughout South Africa.

BEd Honours in Education

Bilingual Education for Diversity Access (BEDA)
The BEd Honours programme in Bilingual Education for Diversity Access (BEDA) is a specialized part-time qualification designed for educators committed to promoting inclusive, multilingual education where diverse languages gain equal access to high-level knowledge. Based in Makhanda, formerly known as Grahamstown, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, this programme provides educators with a critical foundation in bilingual education principles, enhancing both teaching skills and cultural competency.

Program Structure
This two-year program is thoughtfully designed to accommodate the schedules of working educators, providing a total of twenty-five in-person contact days across the duration of the program. These days are organized into intensive, five-day attendance periods, strategically spread throughout the year to balance with professional commitments.

Each immersive, week-long session offers a rich learning experience, with workshops, lectures, and collaborative group activities that foster hands-on learning and active engagement. These sessions are structured to provide educators with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that they can immediately apply in their classrooms. Between these contact sessions, students complete assignments that reinforce classroom insights, allowing them to integrate theory with real-time classroom applications.

It is important to note that the twenty-five contact days are dedicated exclusively to coursework and do not include examination days, ensuring focused learning and in-depth engagement throughout the programme. The design of this programme allows educators to participate fully without compromising their professional obligations, making it an ideal choice for those seeking to advance their expertise while continuing their work in education.

Attendance Requirements
The BEDA program is conducted exclusively in person; attendance at all contact sessions is mandatory to ensure comprehensive learning and active participation in group activities. Likewise, timely submission of all assignments is compulsory to progress through the program. This hands-on approach ensures that students fully benefit from the program’s collaborative and experiential learning model, as they develop skills and strategies for fostering diversity through bilingual education.

Location
Held at our Makhanda campus, this program offers students a unique opportunity to engage directly with faculty and peers while accessing the resources of a vibrant educational community in the Eastern Cape.

By blending bilingual education principles with practical application, the BEd Honours programme seeks to realise diversity and access in teaching practices, and ensuring that diverse languages receive equal access to high-level knowledge and contribute to a more inclusive educational landscape.

Short Course in Creative Writing

The ISEA's Creative Writing Short Course has been a source of inspiration for writers since 1998, attracting a diverse group of students of all ages.

Held during the university term from February to July, the course consists of fifteen classes, scheduled on Tuesday or Thursday evenings. This structured yet open environment provides participants with the opportunity to explore their creativity, refine their writing skills, and celebrate the process of writing. Each year, between 15 and 30 students participate, many of whom return to the course after enjoying the experience in previous years.

The course offers an energizing and supportive space for writers to develop confidence in their craft. Students are encouraged to experiment with various creative exercises, which help to expand their writing styles and stimulate new ways of thinking. The welcoming atmosphere encourages collaboration, allowing participants to share their work, receive helpful feedback, and grow as writers in a community setting. The course culminates in a collaborative project, where participants contribute to the creation of their own publication, AERIAL, which is launched at the end of the year.
