In the midst of my academic journey, my name is ASHIRAFU Miiro, and I'm excited to introduce myself as a visiting research student in the Institute of Water Research, Rhodes University-South Africa. I find it imperative to shed light on my background and the fortuitous turn of events that led me to Rhodes University. As a two-year master's student at Makerere University, I successfully completed my first year of coursework August 2023, with distinction, achieving a first-class with a remarkable GPA of 4.85 ready for second year of research work. Having defended my research proposal, I found myself at a juncture where I had collected and analysed part of my samples but was grappling with the next steps in my research. I found myself at a crossroads due to a significant challenge—lack of funds. This financial inadequacy left me grappling with the next steps in my research, uncertain about how to proceed. Stuck and in need of support, it was precisely at this critical juncture that news of my selection for a credit seeking student mobility study exchange at Rhodes University arrived, offering a timely and fortuitous solution to the challenges I faced. This was stroke of luck and serendipity that would shape the trajectory of my academic pursuits. This turn of events, shared with my supportive supervisor, Dr. Patrick Ssebugere, adding an extra layer of excitement underscoring the transformative nature of the opportunities presented by AWaRMN.
In November 2023, I embarked on a transformative academic journey at Rhodes University, guided by Prof. George Nyakairu, the contact person Makerere University (home), Uganda and Prof. Oghenekaro Nelson Odume, the contact person, Rhodes University(host), South Africa. This marked the next chapter in my pursuit of water research, made possible by the prestigious African Water Resources Mobility Network (AWaRMN) Scholarship.
Upon arrival, the process of settling into Rhodes University unfolded seamlessly. Guided by Ms. Balisa Ngqwala among other staff, I completed a significant registration procedure including the library and laboratory, that are instrumental for my ongoing research endeavors a designated workspace at the Institute of Water Research (IWR109). In my early times at Rhodes, I've had the privilege of connecting and collaborating with esteemed senior researchers. Notably, I've had the chance to engage with Dr. Ellen from the Department of Microbiology, delving into discussions that explored the toxicity of PFASs to aquatic organisms. This interaction not only broadened my understanding of the subject but also paved the way for ongoing collaboration. I am in regular contact with Dr. Ellen, benefiting from her guidance and insights, and I am enthusiastic about the prospect of co-authoring a paper with her in the near future.
My research focus centers around the assessment of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) in wastewater collected from selected treatment plants in Kampala and Jinja cities, Uganda. This undertaking not only aligns with my academic interests but also addresses crucial environmental concerns. As I navigate this research journey, the collaboration with experienced researchers like, Prof Nelson, Dr Chika and Dr. Ellen among others, adds a valuable layer of expertise, contributing to the depth and significance of my work. I look forward to sharing the outcomes of this collaboration and contributing to the growing body of knowledge in the field.
A significant milestone came on the 22nd of November 2023 when I conducted a seminar presentation at the Institute of Water Research. Chaired by Professor Nelson O. Odume, the director of the institute, the presentation garnered valuable comments and feedback. Incorporating these insights, I am currently working on submitting an improved version of the document under the guidance of my supervisors.
Further enhancing my skills, I attended a departmental workshop on November 24, 2023. The workshop, led by Mr. David Forsyth and Ms. Margaret Wolff, focused on effective use of ICT, management, and punctuality, essential aspects for any aspiring scientist.
In the realm of academic production, I am currently immersed in crafting a review paper titled "PFASs in Wastewater Treatment Plants in Africa: Impacts on the Ecological System and Mitigation Strategies." Under the guidance of Prof. George Nyakairu, Dr. Patrick Ssebugere, Dr. Edward Mubiru, and Professor Oghenekaro Nelson Odume, significant progress is being made in the development of this paper.
Looking ahead to December 2023, I am actively participating in a writing retreat training at Rhodes University from the 4th to the 7th. This retreat focuses on refining and submitting the review paper on PFASs in wastewater treatment plants in Africa. Additionally, I am thrilled to announce my involvement in the Water4Life competition (https://fr.unesco-montpellier.org/w4f) with a dedicated research group.
In January 2024, a new chapter in my academic journey is set to unfold as I embark on the writing phase of my master's thesis under the esteemed guidance of the Institute of Research at Rhodes University. This upcoming endeavor holds the promise of not only contributing to the academic landscape but also culminating in the publication of a comprehensive research paper.
Moreover, my time at Rhodes has provided me with a unique opportunity to delve into practical learning experiences, particularly in the realm of statistical tools. Acquiring proficiency in these tools is instrumental as I gear up for the analysis phase of my research results. This hands-on experience enriches my skill set, ensuring a robust and methodologically sound approach to interpreting and presenting my findings. As I anticipate this next phase of academic exploration, the foundation laid at Rhodes University continues to be a source of inspiration and knowledge, propelling me towards meaningful contributions to the field of water research
