This exciting 60 minutes performance by Makhanda artists is part of a community outreach and research project on musical creativity and cultural heritage. The show takes recordings of Xhosa groups from the archive of the International Library of African Music back to their communities.

As part of the research project “Beyond the Digital Return” of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence the International Library of African Music (ILAM) has been engaged in working with the Egazini Outreach Community Centre and Makhanda DJs, poets, and performing artists to creatively reinterpret and remix Xhosa music and songs from the ILAM archives. Originally recorded by Hugh Tracey in the 1950s and 60s, in this project the artists are giving them a contemporary meaning and create new sounds for the ILAM remix project as well.

Supported by the Cluster of Excellence Africa Multiple: Reconfiguring African Studies and ILAM
