Abalone and other invertebrates

Abalone Diet

The aim of this program is to further develop formulated abalone feeds and to make the abalone farming industry in South Africa that use the feed, more competitive on international markets. This research covers fundamental aspects of abalone nutrition such as enzymology, histology and feeding behaviour and applied aspects of animal feed development where specialised feeds are developed for the abalone farming industry. The research is all carried out in collaboration with industry partners and most of the research is carried out under real farm conditions making it more applicable to industry.

Further research

New aquaculture species development, optimising stocking densities of farmed abalone, developing technologies and protocols to better manage water quality on abalone farms, abalone stock selection and culling regimes, for example. This research is carried out in collaboration with players in the South African aquaculture industry.
