Entrance requirements and application procedure

Undergraduate: Students intending to take Fine Art Practice as a major, as part of a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA), Diploma in Fine Art (DFA), or Bachelor of Arts (BA) with Fine Art Practice, are required to submit an entrance portfolio of recent artwork together with their formal admissions application. The applicant’s portfolio must be submitted together with his/her application form to the Student Bureau, Registrars Division. Applicants must not mail or deliver the portfolio to the Fine Art Department directly.

Students intending to take Fine Art Practice as a minor credit (for one or two years) can submit a portfolio directly to the Head of Department, prior to or during Orientation Week.

Students intending to major in Fine Art Practice are advised to study a four-year BFA (Bachelor of Fine Art) – an Honours equivalent degree. However, a three-year BA (Bachelor of Arts) degree with a major in Fine Art Practice is also available.

The degrees are structured as follows:

Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA)

Bachelor of Arts with Fine Art Practice (BA)

Diploma in Fine Art (DFA)

A Diploma in Fine Art is available for students who may not have achieved university entrance but have a strong interest and artistic potential in Fine Art Practice and wish to further their education at tertiary level. This course currently has the same structure as the BFA, except that students are required to complete only the courses in Fine Art Practice and Art History & Visual Culture.

Undergraduate degrees with Fine Art Practice as a minor credit

Fine Art Practice can also be taken as a minor credit (for a year or two) by BA students, and students from other Faculties, who may benefit from the creative problem-solving, visual literacy, and/or practice-based research methodologies foregrounded in this course offering. In this case students would take Fine Art Practice 1A (and, should they wish to continue, Fine Art Practice 2A). Non-BFA students may study Fine Art Practice without Art History & Visual Culture, but can only take Fine Art Practice as a minor in this case (at a first-year level or to a second-year level). To major in Fine Art Practice, students must have a corresponding major in Art History & Visual Culture.

Undergraduate degrees without Fine Art Practice but including Art History & Visual Culture

As noted above, students majoring in Fine Art Practice must study Art History & Visual Culture concurrently. However, students can also study Art History & Visual Culture as part of a degree that does not include Fine Art Practice. Art History & Visual Culture is an especially useful inclusion in BA and BJourn degrees, and may be taken for one year, two years, or as a major.
