Dr Eria Nsubuga

Eria Nsubuga ‘SANE’ is a Ugandan artist with 21 years of artistic practice experience and exhibition in East Africa and around the world.

He is currently at Rhodes University, South Africa attending a Postdoctoral fellowship under the Arts of Africa and Art of the Global Souths Program in the Fine Art Department. He completed a Fine Art Practice PhD at the Winchester School of Art, Southampton University in January 2021. His work explores metaphors of access and border crossing.  His metaphors are plays on some of the factors shaping the bordered world like the inventions of nationhood and race. He is published in the ‘African Arts’ journal, 2017 (UCLA, Rhodes University, et cetera), Transition magazine issue #104 (Harvard University, 2011), among others. SANE has exhibited many times in solo exhibitions in Uganda since 2002 mainly with Afriart Gallery, and Tulifanya Gallery. He also has participated in many group shows including at 1:54 Contempory Art Fair in London (2020), the Tate Modern with a Tate Exchange/ University of Southampton group project (2019), the Centre Pompidou (2007), Cape Town Art Fair 2018; Piasa Art Auction, Art Paris Fair in Paris and ‘Icons and Avatars’ at the David Krut Projects in New York alongside Marlene Dumas and Aida Muluneh (2017).
