Prof Stephen Adeyemi Folaranmi
Stephen F?lárànmí, PhD, is an artist and art historian in the Fine Arts Department at Rhodes University, South Africa. He holds a BA, MFA (Fine Arts with a specialization in Painting), MPhil, and PhD in Art History from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ilé-If??, Nigeria. From 2002 to 2021, he taught Painting, Drawing, and Art History at Obafemi Awolowo University.
His research interests encompass Yorùbá Art Studies, African mural art, and architecture. Stephen has contributed to various journals, conference proceedings, and five book chapters. As an artist, he has participated in numerous group and joint exhibitions, and he has held a solo show. His paintings incorporate traditional and local materials, often drawing on imagery and concepts from his Yorùbá heritage.
In the 2008/2009 session, Stephen was awarded the first Höffmann-Dozentur für Interkulturelle Kompetenz at the University of Vechta, Germany. He is also a recipient of several travel grants, including the 2019 Getty CAA International Travel Grant, the 2020 CAA International Travel Grant, and the 2021 ACASA Travel Grant. Stephen is a member of CAA, ACASA, ASA, SNA, and serves as the National Secretary of the Nigerian Field Society.
