Chiro Nott
Chiro Nott completed a Master of Fine Art (MFA) degree at Rhodes University. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) in 2013 with a distinction in both Studio Practice and Art History and Visual Culture. Chiro focuses her research on the theoretical and practical application of performance art, which is informed by her deep interest in performance as a socially reflexive mechanism in an effort to digest contemporary ritual practices. Both Nott’s graduate exhibition, The Tjak of Washkibat (2013), and her Art History and Visual culture thesis explored the negotiation of tradition and mythology through masquerade. Chiro performed in Everse and Machine for Living in the National Arts Festival in 2014, and won an Ovation Award for her participation in the latter. She recently participated in the 2015 ‘Infecting the City’ in Cape Town, and was named one of Art South Africa’s ‘Bright Young Things’. Her MFA supervisors were Prof Ruth Simbao (theory) and Rat Western.
