Immy Mali
Anderu Immaculate (Immy) Mali (b.1990)is from Arua, Uganda but lives and works in Kampala Uganda. She graduated with a Bachelors in Industrial and Fine Arts from Margaret Trowell School of Industrial Design and Fine Arts, Makerere University in 2014. Mali attended a three months residency at 32° East Ugandan Arts Trust in 2013, where her current practice started taking form. She is a multimedia artist whose work explores personal memories of childhood growing up in Uganda as well as current personal narratives. She creates precarious installations using broken glass, razors, and used hair braids in an attempt to digest the pain of childhood incidents. In some of her work, there is a representation of the conflict between the child seduction of play and adult obligation of safeguarding children. Her work offers perspectives on human resilience and what can be overcome by representing pain as an emotion that can be touched.
She has participated in a number of international group exhibitions, residencies and public art projects in Kampala, Ethiopia, India, Germany and South Africa . In 2017 she spent time at Rhodes University as part of the Arts of Africa and Global Souths RAW (Residencies for Artists and Writers) programme. She is currently attending a Residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
